"Oh How I Love Jesus" Will Never Sound the Same

In Loving Memory
Christine Jenkins Beal
Jan. 21, 1957-Feb. 21, 2009

I attended the funeral of a childhood friend yesterday. I hadn't seen her in a few years but she was just one of those people that had a huge impact on my life. I met her when I was probably not over 8 years old and she was already in her teens. Her name was Christine and she was deaf. I've never seen anyone 'glow' like Christine. There was always a joy and a sparkle in her eyes, and though she couldn't tell me about it verbally, I could sense it in a very strong way.

Oh that people could sense that in me without me using words. My mother and I sang at many churches in Mississippi and Alabama from the time I was just a toddler and at one of those singings is where I met Christine and her wonderful parents. There was just an infinite joy about the entire family; I was always amazed when I was in their presence. Christine taught me sign language and when I'd get impatient with it, she'd smile and we'd get out the note pad and pen. She spent the day with me and my mother at my house one day. One of the things she and I played was "Mother, May I." I can just see her doing the signs and moving her lips and asking "Mother, May I?" She was always smiling; someone even testified to that fact during her home-going service yesterday. I just have to share some things about this service with you.

I have never witnessed such a precious service in my lifetime. My words will be inadequate, but I just have to share this to the best of my ability. When the service began, the preacher and another lady that I didn't know went to the front of the church. The lady stood in one spot the entire service signing each and every word that was spoken whether in the message, testimony, prayer, or song. Christine's husband Larry is deaf and so is most of his family. I just sat and watched them drink in every single word the lady was signing. The service began with everyone standing and singing a congregation song (Standing On The Promises). The preacher read her obituary, then... Christine's three sisters went to the piano and sang. Before they sang, one of the sisters said that their mother's wishes was for them to sing this song because she had taught the chorus to Christine when Christine was twelve years old. Although Christine couldn't hear herself, she sang it. Then, the sister joined the other two at the piano and they started singing. I'm telling you, we'll have to get to Heaven before we hear anything with more harmony and feeling as those sisters voices yesterday. I could tell they were digging deep to get it out, but get it out they did. What a lovely, meaningful memory to Christine and tribute to their mother's patience and love. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. Even the funeral directors were tearing up. These are the words:

When I should feel lonely or I should feel sad,

I'm so contented and my heart is so glad.

Joy bells are ringing, and my soul is singing;

It's wonderful to know He is mine.

When I am discouraged or I'm filled with gloom,

God sends His angels to sing in my room.

I join the singing, the joy bells are ringing;

It's wonderful to know He is mine.

Oh, How I love Jesus.

Oh, How I love Jesus.

Oh, How I love Jesus.

Because He first loved me.

When they got to their seats, the preacher played the guitar and sang "Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus" and "No Not One". It was beautiful. Then, he asked if anyone had anything they'd like to say about Christine. Several people stood up and told of what a blessing she had been in their lives. I wanted to, but I was sitting there about to choke to death. I just can't cry and talk at the same time. Her mother, eighty something years old, raised her hand; the preacher said, "Yes, Sister Jenkins." She slowly stood up and said several things about her daughter. The tears started flowing again. Mrs. Jenkins was strong with her words. She was thanking God and telling us how good God is. She is a great woman of faith. One of her sisters told about teaching Christine to jitter-bug! She said that she would stomp the floor hard so Christine could feel the rhythm and beat, and Christine would just roar with laughter! Bro. Hastings preached a wonderful message and then we were dismissed to the burial. At the grave, Bro. Hastings mentioned that Christine is now able to hear with her ears and I stood there thinking about what she was hearing! I like to think that the first thing she heard when her eyes closed in death was the voice of God saying, "Well done Christine, welcome home." She won't have to sign anymore or carry a little note pad around. We'll meet again my dear friend and I will tell you what an impact you had on my life. Joyfully yours, Liesa

Potato Candy

Don't knock it 'til you try it! My great aunt came by one morning and offered me some candy. It looked good and as I was reaching to get a piece, I asked her what kind of candy it was. When she replied potato candy, I almost took my hand back without a piece. I didn't want to hurt my aunts feelings, so I went ahead and took a piece of the candy that she seemed so pleased with. She watched me as I took a bite. I probably had a surprised look in my eyes as I tasted, and she smiled. I got the recipe from her and I make it in her memory usually at Christmas or at special gatherings.
Potato Candy
1 small red potato, boiled in jacket
1 box confectioner sugar
peanut butter
Boil sm. potato until very tender. Remove jacket. Mash potato with fork. Add sugar a little at a time, keep mashing with fork. This mixture will end up very stiff. Sprinkle wax paper with conf. sugar. Put potato-sugar mix. on the paper and roll out like you would cookie dough. After it's rolled out evenly, spread peanut butter on it. Roll up like a jelly roll, then cut in pieces.
This is simple, but very rich and delish! Enjoy.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY: Monday, February 23, 2009

Outside my window... I see the sunshine peeping through the tall pine trees. I also see a frost on the ground! All is calm outside thus far; even the animals seem to still be snug in their burrows, nests, and holes, staying toasty and warm.
I am thinking...how little I am, but how big God is.

I am thankful for...answered prayer. God just amazes me! I'm also thankful that I am 3.4 pounds lighter this morning than I was a week ago!

From the learning rooms...Cale will finish Math and English this morning before his dentist appointment at lunch. He will finish Biology and work on other subjects when we get back home this afternoon. The rest of the week will hopefully go as normal.

From the kitchen...I smell coffee! Breakfast = cinnamon rolls for Cale, oatmeal for me. Lunch = sandwiches/salad. Supper = chicken tenders, baked tots, and rolls (Something quick due to being away from home for a few hours.)

I am wearing...my pastel blue gown with medium blue daisies. (and my PINK house shoes!)

I am creating...a healthier me.

I am going...to Red Bay today for Cale's dentist appointment. After his appointment, we will stop by Piggly Wiggly for some groceries.

I am reading...only my Bible. I have fallen behind in my daily Bible reading.

I am hoping...to exercise 30 minutes today on top of the already busy schedule.

I am hearing...peace and quiet!!! LOVE IT!

Around the house...there is laundry begging to be made clean. I cleaned house Sat., so I will mostly just straighten each room today.

One of my favorite things...singing a duet with Noelle at church. We sang 'The Old Account Was Settled' yesterday morning. What a blessing to this mother.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Tue. night = church visitation, Wed. night = Bible Study, Thur. afternoon = hunter education class for Cale, beauty shop appointment for me, and of course weekly chores and school.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

A boy is a dog's best friend!

A Special Day

Today is a very special day. Our daughter Noelle accepted Jesus as her personal Savior 7 years ago today. What a blessing! Of all the things I'm thankful for, the salvation of my children are at the top of the list. What a serious thing this is. I don't think we as parents can even fathom the seriousness of this great decision in their lives. It's the difference in Heaven and Hell. We are so guilty of putting such emphasis on other things whether it be education, material things, popularity, etc., sometimes we put such little emphasis on the most important decision any of us will ever make. My children can't get to heaven on my salvation; it's a personal thing. Jesus is a personal savior. He doesn't call us as a family, he calls us individually. I think I've said before in a post, but it stands true today: I would have rather never given birth to my wonderful children than for them to die without Christ. I have asked God for a lot of things, but nothing more important or urgent than for the salvation of my children. God didn't force His great gift upon them, but through His Gospel message, He convicted their hearts and helped them to see their need for a Savior. Ephesians 2:8 & 9 says this: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
My words are so inadequate when I try to thank God for His gift. I am soooo glad that His salvation is based upon His love and what Christ did for us on Calvary, and not based upon anything I do. I fail miserably every day. What peace I have when I realize that my salvation is dependent upon Him, the perfect one. Thank you Lord for saving Noelle. Because of Your grace and mercy, she and I will spend eternity with You. Happy 'Saved By Grace' birthday Noelle.

My New School

I bought this lovely birdhouse from one of the children at church. Don't you just love it? I collect houses and churches and this "School house" just called my name! I think I will write George on the door.

I'm In Love!

Oh My Goodness~Have I found a winner!!! When I was making my grocery list Mon. afternoon, Noelle asked me to write WW coffee ice cream bars on my list. We've never bought them before, but Noelle has hopped on my coffee wagon, and she had seen these and thought they would be good. Well, indeed, she was right! Notice this word on the box...GIANT. They are not kidding. They could have easily made two normal bars out of each giant bar, although, I am not complaining! I almost didn't buy them due to the price. They were a little over five dollars a box, but Noelle hardly ever asks for anything in particular at the store, so I thought this would be a special treat. If you don't like coffee flavors, they also had chocolate. Each scrumptious bar only has 1 WW point, which is insanely good! Noelle, thanks for asking me to add these to my list, what a GIANT idea!

Delicious Pie

My daughter loves to make this pie. She just made one for a friend yesterday. Everyone loves this pie, so I thought some of you might like a new recipe.

Snack a Snicker Pie
1 9 inch prepared graham cracker crust
2 8 oz. pkgs. cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
4 bars Snicker candy, chopped
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
Preheat oven to 350. In a medium mixing bowl, beat cream cheese & sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Fold in all but 1/2 cup of candy. Sprinkle reserved 1/2 cup chopped candy onto bottom of crust. Pour cream cheese mixture into crust. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Do not brown on top. Will be soft in the middle. Chill before serving. Noelle made this with Milky Ways instead of Snickers this last time. Still yummy, or so we've heard! She always grates some chocolate on top after the pie has cooled to make it pretty. This is best when served after being refrigerated for 6 to 8 hours. Enjoy!

My First Tea Cup Experience

My first experience of drinking 'hot tea' out of a 'tea cup' occurred the other day. Last Tue., when Scot and I went to Tupelo, I looked at a couple of places for a tea cup, but didn't find one. I have zillions of mugs, but there's just something delicate and pretty about having a cup of tea.
A cup of tea should be 'a moment'. Or at least it sounds like it should! So, I climbed up and got this tea cup down from among my other pretty dishes sitting on top of my cabinets. I honestly never planned to use this cup. The number one reason was I didn't like hot tea. The number two reason was a dear couple from the first church we pastored gave it to me over 10 years ago. (for no special reason, isn't that sweet?) I have treasured this cup and saucer through the years and was 'protecting' it by not using it. I really wanted to experience drinking my new found love for Snowberry tea in a pretty cup, so I washed the dust off of it, poured my tea, and I felt like I was in a fancy tea room sipping tea with the best of them! I will be very careful with my cup and saucer, but I do plan to use it and have my special moment of tea time sipping from it. I know it's all in my mind but the tea really did taste better out of this tea cup than it did in my coffee mugs! Tea anyone?

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY: Monday, February 16, 2009

Outside my window... I see a squirrel scampering about on a landscape timber. The sun is peeping through the clouds every now and then.

I am thinking...about my schedule for today.

I am thankful for...having both children home today. I'm also thankful for a good nights rest. I was getting weary.

From the learning rooms...school as usual today. I'm never sure as to what to write here. I am down to one student, so there's not much to share. In the mornings, Cale works in his room on the subjects he does alone while I do my chores. Then, he and I usually work on the other subjects in the living room after he takes a small break and does his a.m. chores.

From the kitchen...I plan to include turnips in the menu for tonight's supper. Mrs. Bernice gave me several from her garden. There is some coconut cake in the fridge left over from last night. I'm doing my best to ignore it!

I am wearing...my warm pink robe. (it matches my PINK house shoes!) :)

I am creating...really nothing at this time, other than a more organized house and a more "fit" me. Yes, I'm starting a diet and exercise program today! (Walk Away The Pounds, Leslie Sansone mixed with Weight Watchers)

I am going...to Piggly Wiggly to buy groceries this afternoon.

I am reading...my Bible and Walk Away The Pounds by Leslie Sansone. I am hoping to begin the Mail Order Bride series by Al & Joanna Lacy sometime this week.

I am hoping...our friend Claire does well after having her wisdom teeth cut out this morning. I am hoping and praying for my Uncle Joyce Lee who begins Chemo and Radiation treatments today. I'm also hoping that my family and friends will say a prayer for me. (read I am creating)

I am hearing...my children's footsteps as they prepare for the day.

Around the house...laundry.... need I say more! I'm not complaining; that just means we have clothes to wear, towels & bath cloths, sheets, etc.

One of my favorite things...being surrounded by family, friends, and church family!

A few plans for the rest of the week: mostly just school during the day, catch up on some ironing, keep organizing, Wed. night Bible study at church, grocery shopping,...

Here is picture thought I am sharing... My father in law Gordon, my daughter Noelle, my husband Scot, my mother in law Nora Ann, and my son Cale. I took this picture last night. Scot's parents visited our church last night and came out to our house after church. Nora Ann brought 2 delicious cakes that we enjoyed after hot dogs and chili!

"Bear" With Me!

"Bear" with me, one more valentine post and I'll start with something else next time, I promise! I just LOVE-LOVE-LOVE Valentines Day! My family celebrated together last night. This afternoon, my daddy is taking his 'sweethearts' out! (includes Mother, me, and my family) We usually pick something up at the local restaurant on Friday nights, but last night, I cooked supper. I cooked pork chops, mashed potatoes, corn, and rolls. We usually eat at the bar, but I set the table, and also placed every one's valentine gift and card at their place. As I was putting the finishing touches on the meal, Scot sneaked my card on my plate! Cale hid Noelle's gift in her chair! We had a delicious meal together, indulged in chocolates for dessert, then settled down in the living room and watched "Fireproof" for the second time. Have you seen it? If not, go rent it, or better yet, buy it. I plan to buy it sometime. I cried during several scenes, again! Well, this is it for blogging this Valentines Day. I have to say before I close this post, that above all else, I'm thankful for God's love. I'm thankful that He saw fit to send His Only Begotten Son to die in my place. I thank the Lord Jesus for dying willingly for me and for being so real in my life. Does Jesus live in your heart? Friend, I recommend Him. As an old song says, "Until you've known the loving hand that reaches down to fallen man, and picks him from out of sin where he has trod. Until you've known just how it feels to know that God is really real, then you've known nothing until you've known God and his love."
Noelle's gift from Cale.
(Dean Martin CD and card)

CHOCOLATES!

Cale had a bag full of candy and fishing 'stuff'.

Noelle and Cale checking out their Dad's candy!

Vintage Valentines

I couldn't decide which Valentines to share, so I'm sharing all of them. Brings back childhood memories. The 70's may not have been quite this vintage, but I love these anyway~
I would give credit as to where I found these but I can't remember. I googled "Vintage Valentines" a couple of weeks ago and these are what I found.

Our Song

To me

You are the hand that I reach for

When I've lost my way

To me

You are the first star of evening

The sun that warms my day.

[CHORUS]

Just as sure as

I'm sure there's a Heaven

This was meant to be

No road is too long

As long as you belong to me

To me

You are the truth I've been living

Girl, I believe in you

To me

You are the love I have looked for

My whole life through

[repeat CHORUS 2x]
Note: this is the song sang as I walked down the aisle at our wedding.

My Valentine

Sunday night, Noelle & Cale presented Scot and me with a Valentine card. It's a very pretty and sweet card. They enclosed a gift card for Olive Garden or Red Lobster. They insisted that Scot and I go on a date! We are guilty of taking our children everywhere! I'm not complaining by no means, but since this was the stipulations for the gift, Scot and I agreed to go on a date, alone!
Just so happen, there was a meeting Tue. morning at a nearby church that Scot wanted to attend, so he went in and worked a while, then came home, got ready and went to this meeting. He came home around 1:30 and he and I then left around 2:oo on our date! We ran some errands like any normal date :), then went and ate at Red Lobster. We enjoyed a meal of fried everything! ha. We had butterfly shrimp, popcorn shrimp, fish, crab cakes, salads, baked potatoes, and of course Cheddar Bay Biscuits! I had a coupon for Red Lobster, so after we used the coupon and the gift card, Scot paid two dollars and thirty something cents for our meal, plus a tip for our sweet waitress. We had so much food, we brought some of it home, and the nice waitress sent a bag of biscuits home with us as well. After we ate, we went to Scruggs and loafed a while (Scot's choice) and on to Hobby Lobby (my choice). And of course, what would the perfect date be without a trip to Wal Mart for some groceries?! We met our curfew too. We were home before 8:oo and worn out from our lovely date.
Oh, and by the way, we have terrific children.

Thank you Noelle and Cale.

I took this pic. of Scot before he left for church that morning.

I'd Do It All Over Again

A few years ago, Scot was asked to speak at a Valentine Banquet and I was asked to sing. They wanted a "love" song. I am not morbid, but I handle funeral songs much better than wedding songs. They are just easier songs to sing. I get literally sick when I sing at weddings. I've pretty much sworn off from singing at weddings. Back to my story.... I searched and searched for a song to sing at the banquet, and about 2 days before the event, I sat down and decided just to write my own song. And it goes like this:

I'D DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN

Chorus:
I'd do it all over again. I'd do it all over again.
I'd be your bride, I'd stand by your side.
Yes, I'd do it all over again.

1. We've been together for many years.
We've had our joys and we've shed some tears.
Knowing now all I didn't know then.
I'd still do it all over again.

2. I sang to you on our wedding day.
Whither thou goest, that's where I'd stay.
Not even knowing where our steps would end.
I'd do it all over again.

3. When our time down here shall come to pass.
Already it's gone by seems too fast.
No matter what comes our way til then,
I'd do it all over again.

4. I thank God for the good times,
I thank Him for the bad.
I thank Him for all the precious years we've had.
And when we get to heaven, I know I'll say,
No regrets!
I'd do it again.

(Words & Music- Liesa G. George, Copy Right Feb. 02)

Ruth 1:16-17
And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if aught but
death part thee and me.

Love Is In The Air

Can you feel it? Love is in the air! Valentines Day is 1 week away. I love Valentines Day! It includes some of my favorite things: hearts, the colors pink and red, love, cards, candy, flowers, .... Oh, it doesn't matter if I don't receive all of those things, (we usually eat out and exchange valentines) especially the candy, but just seeing the shelves of it at stores puts a mushy warm feeling in me. And the feeling of love, there's just nothing like it, is there? Even if you're a child or a single person without a significant other, everyone loves love, everyone needs love. Get busy and spread some around. I will remember my sweetheart, but I'll also spread some love to my children, parents, and friends. I got my first valentine last night. Noelle and Cale gave Scot and me a valentine with a gift card enclosed. The gift card can be used at Red Lobster or Olive Garden restaurants. Now I know why my daddy politely fusses every time I spend money on him. I did the same to the kids last night! I was happy that they were being so thoughtful and generous, but at the same time, I felt terrible that they had used their own money on us. But, I will humbly and thankfully abide by their wishes and go on a date with my husband one day or evening next week. I will do my best to share some thoughts and pictures about love and Valentines Day over the next week. Turn your speakers on and listen to my song selections. I couldn't find my favorite love song, "To Me" sung by Barbara Mandrel and Lee Greenwood. That is the song that was sung at our wedding as I walked down the aisle. Maybe I'll post the words in a post in a day or two. Well, enjoy the love that's in the air and the love that's in your hearts! Oh, and most of all, enjoy the love that God so generously gave us in His Son Jesus. Get to spreadin'!

Why Go To Church?

A good friend sent this to me a couple of years ago. I saved it, and ran across it this morning. Thought I'd share. It's cute, but true!

Why Go To Church?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all."

This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this ... They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"
When you are DOWN to nothing.... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!
Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

Supper by Candlelight

My title sounds so nice, romantic even, doesn't it? We had supper by candlelight due to a power outage. My menu for the night included deer tenderloin/gravy which I had cooking in the crock pot, mashed potatoes, corn, and biscuits. The smell of the tenderloin and gravy cooking were making my mouth water this afternoon around 3:30. I had the potatoes laid out on the bar already, waiting to cook them closer to time for supper. That was my plan! The power flickered a few times this afternoon, but didn't go completely off that time. The next time it flickered, our lights were out for over 3 hours. So, Scot lit one of the eyes on my gas/electric stove and I cooked supper. We enjoyed our supper of grilled cheese sandwiches, pickles, and chips while smelling the meat that would have been done had the power stayed on! Oh well, I now have part of our meal prepared for tomorrow night. Claire (Deacon Harold's daughter) called. Their power was out also. I led her to believe that our power wasn't out. I told her to tell her daddy that if he'd be nicer to his pastors wife, he wouldn't have to live in the dark so much. She relayed the message; I heard him laughing in the background. He probably prefers the dark over being nice to me! Ha. I finally fessed up and told the truth. (after I'd had my fun) Ole Harold will celebrate his 50th birthday this weekend, and boy, am I ready for that! I'll be 50 one of these days, so I know that we reap what we sow, but by the time I'm 50, he'll be so old, he'll forget about what I do to him anyway. Yea, I have a mean streak! (if you've not read about Harold and all the fun we've had with him, you can find the stories here on past posts!) He's a hoot!

This is the card I bought for him. He never gets on the computer, so it's safe for me to share.

Kindness

I've been doing a study on thoughtfulness, kindness, you know putting your intentions into actions. As mother says; 'putting legs on it.' I will have a post tomorrow morning on The KJV Directory http://kjvblogs.blogspot.com/ that will deal with some of this: I don't want to give all of it away before tomorrow, but for today, I encourage you to do something extra and unexpected for someone in your household. Like what, you ask? Take out time just to listen and talk, I believe that is considered a conversation. Sometimes we're in the same house, but we're not together. Fix someone a snack or pour them a drink, do one of their chores for them, put a 'happy' note in someones lunch box for tomorrow. Put your thinking cap on, I know you'll come up with something nice! My second suggestion: call someone. Call your mother or daddy, grandparents, an aunt or uncle you've not talked to or seen in a long time. Call a shut in, widow, widower, someone sick or in despair. Don't talk for hours, just about 2 minutes will do. Ask how they are, if they need anything, and while you're at it, tell them how special they are to you. A small act is greater than the greatest intention! You'll be the one that ends up getting blessed! Oh, by the way, I'm glad you visited Life By George today. Thanks. God loves you, and that there is reason enough to feel very special, yes, very special indeed!
